LAURENT DUBOIS (Professor of history, Duke University): There’s no doubt that he didn’t bring that political experience a lot of the other figures had. But for those that supported him, that was sort of the advantage—that he would be a different kind of figure, a different kind of president.
MARTIN: One of the things that I’ve constantly said that was important was that people not take their attention off of the country, not take their attention off of what needs to be done to fix the damaged country. I believe on the flipside, that as the suction took place as related to his possible run, that people were focused on those vital issues. To me, that was important. There’s no difference between when you have an entertainer in this country who gets involved in a particular issue and they bring awareness to something. That’s how you utilize your star power for that purpose. So I don’t think for a second that him deciding to run somehow took away from the real issues. What it did was kept people’s attention, who otherwise may have stopped thinking about the country and what needs to be done.
