You don’t have to worry about Chrissy Lampkin sugarcoating a damn thing! No wonder Jimmy loves her. She’s a no-holds-barred spitfire who hopped on the horn with VIBE Vixen to give us the scoop about her forthcoming VH1 show Love & Hip-Hop. Do you think she’s just another “rapper’s girlfriend”? Did you know she wasn’t the first pick for the show? Guess again, fam! She’s the livest one in the bunch and there’s no suprise that she’s opening up about why she proposed to Jim, why his mother Nancy dislikes her so much and why she’s keeping an eye on a fellow cast member. -Niki McGloster
VIBE VIXEN: Tell me how you got onboard with Love & Hip-Hop.
CHRISSY LAMPKIN: Well, orginially VH1 gave Jimmy a show and it didn’t really work out. His idea of a reality show and what the crew had in mind wasn’t the same thing, so he was kind of not interested. But we had been doing this for a minute. We had shot two pilots and VH1 liked my personality. We were having the hardest time getting it off the ground and Mona Scott Young came onboard to help Jim and I out, and it morphed into a show with me. They went and got some girls and put it together, and it turned out to be a perfect match; a scenario that felt good.
Oh, okay, so it was a show that centered around or was based off of you?
I don’t want to say it was centered around me, but I was the first one there. Everybody else got added on. It follows everybody’s story. I’m trying to be fair and be humble, but definitely they went and got girls and we all clicked. Like, they brought me other girls and it wasn’t right.
Well some people get it confused and think it’s a show that stemmed from Mashonda’s life.
Yeah, Mashonda will have you believe that. She will tell you that. I never really been one to set it straight, but yeah she likes to exaggerate things.
Oh wow. What’s the relationships between you and Mashonda? Are things not good?
I wouldn’t say that they’re not good, but you know, I keep my eye on her. She can be funny at times.
Wow. Well, I’ll glad you’re talking about this because I want to know your relationship with the other girls as well.
I like Emily. I like Olivia. Somaya, I can’t say that I don’t like her; I just don’t really know her. I just think her views on some things are just not realistic. But you know, that’s what makes the world go ‘round—different types of people. I don’t have anything bad to say about her.
From the trailer, viewers can see that there’s some tension between the girls, but since the show ended, can you say you maintained those same good relationships?
Most definitely. I think if anything they’ve gotten a little better. I respect Somaya for who she is in her lane, and I don’t take it personally. Everyhing’s good. We’re in a good spot, but when those cameras started rolling and they put you in crazy situations, what can come of it? [Laughs]
Were you nervous at all for the cameras to catch personal situations between you, Jim and his mother Nancy?
I wasn’t nervous about it. We’ve been doing this for three summers. While we were filming this last time, it wasn’t real for me. The emotions were definitely real, but I didn’t really sit back and analyze it and think that wow… the world is gonna watch it. It’s been so long coming that I wasn’t really nervous. Now? Absolutely. The world is gonna see just how dysfunctional my life is! It is what it is. You know, maybe it’ll be theraputic.
Do you think this will be an opportunity to clear the air about a lot of things and get some things off your chest?
I don’t know so much about things off my chest, but it’s helping me realize that no matter how hard I try, Nancy will never really accept me, so I don’t take it personally. There were times when I was really upset about how our relationships were working out because I truly love Jimmy, and I don’t want to put him in a bad position. He’s dealing with his mother feeling a way about me, and that’s gotta be a really bad spot for him. I don’t really want that for him, but the reality is I’m not the one causing that. There’s nothing I can do about that.
Is the realtionship with Nancy still like that now?
I have to stay away from her. I really have to stay away from her because I’m not a child, and I refuse to be treated like one. I’m a grown woman as well. I respect her as his mother, but when [she] starts acting other than his mother then [she's] going to get what [she] got coming to [her].
Now, why was it initially so bad between you two?
Because she felt like I have the power. She feels like her son comes to me, as he should as his partner and not run to mama. She just needs to let go and let him frown up and let him be a good partner in a healthy relationship. And she don’t know nothing about that.
Do you think she’ll watch the show and learn a few things? Maybe see where she’s at fault?
Absolutely not. That’s not how her brain works. She’s gonna look at it and laugh at all the ignorance and try to get paid to walk through the parties. That’s where she is with it.
That’s wild. Well, to step away from the issues with his mom, I definitely want to know how you mustered up that courage to ask Jimmy to marry you?
Because he was taking too damn long! [Laughs] Like, we’re already playing house, he’s already stuck with me and sometimes men need a little push.
[Laughs] I can understand that. Was it frustrating to be with this man and he never proposed?
No, because I know what I got myself into. You know, he’s definitely younger than me and to be honest with you, neither one of us is really ready right now to get married, but I wanted to let him know that I love him enough and that’s definitely in my plans. We didn’t’ set a date or anything like that, but I just had to let him know. I do love [him] enough to show that it’s time to grow up and that I’m here for [him].
Now, did you ever see yourself in a relationship with a rapper?
Nope. I’ve been around it for a long time and they have really hard lifestyles. There’s so many thing thrown to them on fast forward from women to money to disappointment. You know, it’s a whole lot to deal with. It just so happened that we fell in love and that was his profession. Fuck it! [Laughs]
[Laughs] Do you enjoy having Emily B around to talk to who is also dating a rapper?
Yeah, it does help. She knows where I’m coming from. Some of the things she deals with I don’t identify with, but if she ever wanted to talk to me about anything, I’m here for her. Our situations are similar but they’re not completely the same. Every situation is unique. Every girl won’t be me and every guy won’t be Jimmy, so the only thing I can say is make sure you truly love this person. You gotta be in it for the right reasons because if you’re in it for the wrong reasons, that shit is going to wear off real fast. You can’t just love the good parts; you got to love all of it.
Tell me more about Chrissy and your identity away from Jim and the show. What pots do you have your hands in right now as far as your career?
Right now, I’m working on a jewelry line and working on a clothing line that’s dedicated to just tops. Nothing really that’s going to change the world just yet, but I’m looking to bump into that during this ride.
Okay, so this is just the beginning stages of all that?
Yeah, I’m trying to see what’s next and embrace it all.
