Music, fashion and horse back riding, we get in with Janelle Monae.

Word has been buzzing around about the release of Bad Boy artist Janelle Monae’s first album, titled Metropolis: The Chase Suite, released on August 12th. So we decided to have a little chat to learn more about her fashion and music style.

VIBE: How would you describe your sound?

I don’t describe it at all. Andy Warhol is one of my favorite artists one of the things he would always say is never label your art, while they’re trying to categorize you continue to produce more art. So that’s really all I’m focused on, producing art.

How would you describe your personal style?

Normally I try to keep it very classic, very tailored, very uniform - not doing too much. On stage I’m more so like James Brown and Elvis, Mick Jagger or the Rolling Stones, I love to be outlandish with reds and oranges but with my personal style I have to balance that out with something that’s classic.

Where do you draw you’re inspiration from?

Katherine Hepburn is one of my inspirations because she was the first women to walk the red carpet with high waist pants when during that time women were suppose to be very demur, feminine and wearing a dress. I think right now in my generation and in the music industry what I would hope to do for young women is to show that they have different options. I at least want to help redefine the way young women can dress.

What designers have you been wearing recently?

Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brother, and I like Tom Ford. I do a lot of vintage shopping too because I really don’t like walking around looking like everyone else. Little Five points here in Atlanta Georgia has really cool stuff and I also have a tailor so I get a lot of my stuff custom made. Simple wide high-waist pants and black, and white is where I am right now. You can do so much with proportion if it’s done correctly.

I’m also into equestrian wear, during my off time I’m usually wearing my riding boots. I actually started to get into it when I lived here in Atlanta because I wanted to be an equestrian rider, but singing and being an artist outweighed that easily.

Give us your best fashion tip.

If you’re in love with something buy as much as you possibly can. I buy in bulk cause what I’ve ended up doing is falling in love with certain pieces. I’ll buy a lot of oxford white shirts and I remember when I got my first pair of saddle oxfords I wore them so much they were beyond repair.
