New Era collaborates with Tradition for a fresh take on HBCU apparel

For the average consumer finding mainstream college apparel for schools like UCLA, UNC, Duke, etc is easy, however finding Historical Black College and University (HBCU) gear is a lot more difficult. With the exception of the AACA (African American College Alliance) line of sweat suits that rose to prominence in the early to mid 1990’s and the recent Victoria Secrets launched HBCU Pink collection, Black college paraphernalia has been stuck outside of popular urban fashion, that is until now.

Last year New Era Cap Co. announced that they had teamed up with Atlanta based apparel based design company, Tradition, to launch New Era presents Tradition. Since then caps, sweatshirts and t-shirts have been released to the market via traditionhbcu.com. The official spring collection will see a much wider release in February 2009 at various chain and independent retailers including Man Alive, Champs, The Athletes Foot and the New Era flagship stores.

What really sets Tradition apart from most collegiate fashion is that the designers went beyond the norm with their pieces. In addition to the tees, hoodies and fitted caps, Tradition also offers rugby’s, letterman jackets and button down shirts.

Currently there are 30 schools represented including Clark Atlanta University, Howard, Morehouse, Tuskeegee and many more pending. Royalties from sales of the merchandise also go to the schools so when you are buying a piece of Tradition you are not only representing your alma mater you’re also giving back
