V Politics: Is Van Jones Obama’s First Black Eye?

“On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me. They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide. I have been inundated with calls — from across the political spectrum — urging me to ‘stay and fight.’ But I came here to fight for others, not for myself.” That’s how Van Jones went out on Saturday night. That’s how the guy President Barack Obama picked to be “Special Advisor for Green Jobs” quit his job. Now the “fight for others” just got that much harder, because the Republicans accomplished their goal, “distract and divide.” Knowing the conservative game plan to distort the truth with lies and propagandas that paint the current administration as a socialist party taking the country down a Nazi-like path to communism, Jones probably should have stayed the course. He should have stayed and fought just so it doesn’t make Fox News’ job of blasting President Obama’s decisions that much easier. Yeah sure it’s easy to see why this “self-described Marxist” would step out of the way and not risk dragging the president into the muddy waters of his murky past. After all, the president has already been through this with Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers, no need for him to have to defend his relationship with this anti-capitalist who refers to Republicans as “assholes.” Thing is, this “smear campaign” (spearheaded by Fox News host Glenn Beck) is not about Van Jones’ militant far left past. It’s always been about Republicans quest for change look ineffective. In the midst of the Republican “health scare” crusade, taking down one of Obama’s guys with half truths only strengthens their ability to push more fabricated stories. Understanding that this tactic didn’t work with Rev. Wright or Mr. Ayers, should have been enough to keep Mr. Jones around. Playing defense, he never gave himself the opportunity to get on the offensive. Throwing Jones at the Republicans was Obama’s attempt to appease the far left with a radical guy who would show the right they meant business about eco-capitalism. So maybe if Jones had helped to create a significant amount of green jobs, his present contributions would have overshadowed his past. For most Americans, if this so-called “communist” was responsible for creating jobs in this tattered economy he’d be fine with us, even if he was associated with an organization that accused President George W. Bush of planning the attacks on 9/11. Now instead, this revolutionary fighter is walking away from a battle that might help the opponent win the war. –Rondell Conway
