C Notes: Toni Braxton, ‘Toni Braxton’

With her rumbling alto and signature cropped do, Toni Braxton had a way of showing strength and beauty through vulnerability. Anyone who watched The Box religiously remembers “Breathe Again” and its accompanying black-and-white flick featuring Toni running through a garden maze in an embellished dress. Besides “Let It Flow,” “Just Be A Man About It” and “He Wasn’t Man Enough,” not to mention her underappreciated 2005 album Libra, I’m a fan first of her ’90s work, namely her 1993 self-titled debut, home to “Another Sad Love Song” and “Breathe Again.”
