Don’t Mess With Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club

Many rappers might ruffle with Jay-Z on a lyrical level, but few would dare mess with his business. Boston Red Sox hitter, David Ortiz is experiencing firsthand the wrath of jeopardizing Hov’s funds.

MSNBC reports that the baller is being sued by the hip-hop mogul and his business partner, Juan Perez, for naming a Dominican Republic nightclub, Forty/Forty—an obvious bite off of Jay’s string of celebrated 40/40 sports bar lounges.

Both have accused Ortiz of availing and capitalizing on the popularity of their brand, resulting in what their lawsuit claims to be “marketplace confusion and damage.”

Jay and Perez’s lawsuit further stated: “David Ortiz is fully aware of plaintiff’s Manhattan 40/40 Club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions long before he opened his infringing Forty/Forty Club.”

Jay and Perez premiered the New York location of 40/40 in June 2003. The 40/40 franchise also includes locations in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, with future plans of building venues in Macau and Tokyo. —Tracy Garraud
