Macy Gray On Lady Gaga: ‘She’s The Only Person That Does What She Does’

In an exclusive interview with Betty Confidential, Macy Gray discussed a variety of topics, including her new album, Lady Gaga and her upcoming role in Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. Here’s an excerpt:

How was working with Bobby Brown?

It was awesome. I wanted to do a love song and he’s one of the last courters. Guys out there don’t sing to the ladies anymore. He was the guy that did “Every Little Step I Take”! I have a song called “Real Love” and I just thought he would be perfect for it. It ended up being one of my favorite songs on the record.

Speaking of love, do you have it in your life these days?

I’m hanging out. But I’m really busy and it’s hard to find time in my schedule.

Who do you think is the sexiest celebrity man out there?

Javier Bardem. He’s beautiful. I wouldn’t even know what to say to him.

What do you think of Lady Gaga?

She tells kids that it’s okay to be different and outlandish, and she backs it up with real talent so I like her.

What does a young aspiring music artist have to do to make it today?

That’s hard to say because everyone has his or her own story. There’s no specific formula. If you want to last you have to be good and master your craft. You have to have real talent to stick around. Whatever you do, make sure you practice and do it well. Like Lady Gaga—she’s the only person that does what she does. I’m the only person that does what I do. You have to find that thing that you have that nobody else has.
