Wyclef Jean Will Officially Not Be President Of Haiti, Gives Up Bid
This may come as a surprise, but Wyclef Jean is not going to be president of Haiti anytime soon. After several weeks of campaigning for the upcoming election in his homeland, the ex-Fugees member is officially ditching the presidential trail, he announced today (Sept. 21).
“After weeks of quiet but painstaking reflection with my wife and daughter, I have chosen to end my bid for the presidency of Haiti,” Wyclef said in a statement. “This was not an easy conclusion to reach; but it is one that was thoughtfully made, taking into account many, many competing factors and weighing the course that will best advance the healing of the country and help it find the quickest path to recovery.”
Haiti’s Provincial Electoral Council had already deemed Wyclef ineligible for the presidency because he didn’t meet the requirements. But Clef was initially set on appealing the ruling. During his run, he faced some public shots from former Fugees bandmate Pras, as well as actor Sean Penn.
With those presidential sights now in his rearview, Wyclef plans on getting back to his roots: making music. His next solo album, due February 2011, is aptly titled, If I Were President, the Haitian Experience, and he’s also working on a mixtape with DJ Whoo Kid.
“We’re going to make it some sick shit. We’re going to do videos and all kinds of nonsense. On some Haitian general shit,” Whoo Kid told VIBE recently. “Clef is yapping with a couple cats right now like T.I. and a couple other dudes, but we’re working it out.”
Is this good news? Or are you disappointed that Wyclef is no longer in the running to become Haiti’s Next President?
