Today In Black History: Leon Chats Creating Diversity In Hollywood, Future Projects

How do you guys make co parenting work with the distance, especially when it comes to your busy careers?

It’s not easy but for the most part its like a good team. Like a basketball team or anything else, you have stars, you have role players so in this situation Noel lives with Cynthia, and Cynthia takes care of everything on a day-to-day basis. And I, as her dad, do the broad strokes. Mommy takes care of her and daddy makes sure that she grows up to be a really nice woman. So as far as where she goes to school and how she’s doing in school and trips⎯we discuss it. Whether on the phone or in person, we discuss what our long term goals are for our child.

What else are you working on?

Actually what I’m doing at this point in my career is, you realize that being an actor is just a pawn in the process or the last piece in the puzzle and you’re the most identifiable thing to the project. People are walking down the street going, “Damn, Leon’s last movie was booty.” Meanwhile, all I did was act my part to a T. After a while you realize when you act it’s all about the story. The part you play in the story is important only if the story is good. I don’t care how good you are. So right now I’m in a place where I’m creating things that I want to see up on the screen and a book that I’m optioning and that’s all I can say at the moment.

What types of movies do you want to see out there?

I like to see movies with diversity. We live in a society where mixed race is the predominant race in our country so I want to see more movies that reflect the diversity in the country we live in. You can make reality TV and you can’t make reality on screen? So that’s what I’d like to see and as far as my people are concerned I want to see us do quality work. I want to see us get the budgets to do really big things because there’s so much talent out there.
