Hollywood icon and actress Elizabeth Taylor died today at the age of 79 from congestive heart failure.

Through eight stormy marriages and over-the-top fame and glamour, Taylor had been media’s darling and Hollywood’s heiress. When signing on to star in Cleopatra for $1 million in 1963, she became the highest paid actor of the time. Prior to that movie, she had already reached iconic status through several films and Academy Award-winning roles.

In the latter part of her life, her love for jewelry (specifically diamonds) became clear, as well as her desire to serve humanity. She created her own AIDS foundation and donated several million to AIDS and HIV causes.
