SXSW 2011 Diaries: 7 Things We've Learned From Music Day One
When the VIBE crew decended on Austin, Texas, SXSW first-timers Mikey Fresh and John Kennedy had no idea what they were in for. Here, VIBE music editor JFK drops a day-by-day breakdown of seven things he's learned from day one. Swag.
MELLOWHYPE IS FAR FROM MELLOW
If you thought Tyler, The Creator was the only eccentric and electrifying member of the unruly Odd Future crew, direct your attention to MellowHype. Left Brain spat rapid-fire rhymes, peppered with "Free Earls" and "Fuck Steve Harveys" at Downtown Austin's Club Deville, while Hodgy Beats ordered chants of "swag." Tyler, The Creator was especially jubliant and he bounced around the crowd before taking the stage for "Fuck The Police." OFWGKTA is far from one man strong. More on them in a bit.
YOUNG L HATES SWAG
He told us as much in the green room at VIBE House. It's an unexpected revelation for the Berkley producer and right-hand man of the swagtastic Lil' B. Look out for the full story later today on VIBE.com
YELAWOLF IS A MANIAC
Shady's newest prospect is a gentleman and a scholar on a one-on-one level. But once he hits the stage, he transforms into a mad man. Literally caught him at the FADER Fort when he decided to sprawl out into the audience and crowd surf. And that was before chugging a beastly can of Budweiser on stage.
OFWGKTA JUST MIGHT HAVE TOURETTE'S SYNDROME
Random shouts of "fuck" are heard from the backstage area. As the group's publicist is trying to wrangle the Odd Future crew for a introduction, Mellowhype's Hodgy Beats and Left Brain walk by and scream in your face. Tyler, The Creator punctuates his fist bumped meeting with "swag," before dropping f-bombs of disappointment at missing Toro's set at FADER.
So you mean to tell me I'm supposed to retain this collection of crummy paper wristbands all week? How do I shower?
GOTTA ACT FAST
Within an hour of an annoucement about Kanye West's not-so-secret Saturday night G.O.O.D. Music showcase, more than 10,000 folks RSVP'd. Want to see 'Ye? Better line up 'round 7 p.m. for the 2 a.m. show. Seriously.
RED BULL IS YOUR FRIENEMY
Gotta remember that SXSW is a marathon, not a sprint. Started fading by the time I hit VIBE House last night, so I downed a Battery (Red Bull and vodka) for a much-needed jolt. Wasn't prepared for the crash a couple hours later, though. And it's still only day one?! Ugh.
