LGBT WIN! Cali Governor Signs Bill Requiring Schools To Teach LGBT History

While the bill passing same-sex marriage in New York is still fresh in people’s minds, the gay community can now add another notch on their belt of accomplishments. Democratic California Governer Jerry Brown has signed a bill that will require public schools in the state to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

In a statement on the groundbreaking bill, Brown said “This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books. It represents an important step forward for our state, and I thank Senator Leno for his hard work on this historic legislation.”

He’s referring to San Francisco Senator Mark Leno, who wrote the bill. “Today we are making history in California by ensuring that our textbooks and instructional materials no longer exclude the contributions of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Americans,” Leno said in a statement.

The bill will take effect in January, but don’t expect to see the plight of the gay community in history textbooks until 2015. Whether or not you support or discriminate, this is a movement people. This is shaping up to be the biggest issue of focus for the remainder of the decade. —Keenan Higgins
