Thou Shall Tweet: 10 Things We Can Learn From Twitter

For many of us 140 characters has become an adopted way to communicate and pass time. If we are not tweeting, we are thinking about what to tweet or checking out our new followers. Don’t deny it, I know you check it too. Say what you want about Twitter but everyone has a love/hate relationship with the social networking site.

Since its debut, Twitter has changed the landscape of social networking. Some would argue people use Twitter to shameless promote themselves and not have the intentions of building relationships, but at the end of the day we all use Twitter for different reasons.

No matter if you are an advocate user or not, I have listed some things you can actually learn from Twitter:

  1. We all are bipolar. One minute we’re tweeting religious hymns, motivational quotes and the next we are posting infamous bathroom photos. No flash.
  2. There is a #team for everything. It is very easy to start a team. You can either be the captain or the only person on the team. At the end of the day, nobody really cares which team you play for.
  3. Twitter bios need to be verified. Seems like everyone is a stylist, blogger, producer, model, dancer, public relations specialist, author, talent scout, socialite and actor all at once. I still don’t know how you can fit all of what you do in 160 characters but people will try. I need to see some resumes or at least can Twitter perform some background checks. Delusional!
  4. English ain’t everyone’s first language. Somewhere we forgot about our basic homonyms, verb conjugation and where to actually put punctuation. You can really learn a lot about someone just from ‘there’ updates.
  5. Celebrities have issues too. Everyone is human and sometimes get into his or her feelings. Some people more than others though. See Chris Brown, Rihanna, Erykah Badu and Joe Budden.
  6. All avatars are not created equal. It is very easy to look good in a 73 x 73 avatar- trust me I’ve tried. However, once you click to enlarge you can suddenly find out the real truth. Eek!
  7. How to read a complete sentence with no spaces. Sometimes 140 characters just aren’t enough- WeHaveToPuTItAllTogetherToMakeOurPoint.
  8. No need for other local or national news outlets. If it comes across our timeline, it must be true- especially if CNN confirms.
  9. Black people run Twitter. Many of the trending topics coming through often revolve around the Black culture; and of course, in a negative way. Yet, we still participate in the foolishness. #WeGotstaDoBetter
  10. Everyone can have a following. Please consult your local timeline of self-made critically acclaimed Twitter elite members.

So what are some things you’ve learned from Twitter? Good or bad. Remember Vixens, sharing is caring.
