Kardashian Kollection Rips Off a Botkier Bag: Do You Buy Knock Offs?

Kardashian Kollection - Botkier knock-offOf course the launch of the Kardashian Kollection by Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian for Sears is not without its share of drama. The collection has already made headlines for a bag that is curiously similar to a standout piece from Botkier’ Fall 2009 Collection.

The Kardashian Kollection produced the leopard bag on the top right while the black leather bag on the left was designed by Botkier in 2009. The question on everyone’s minds: Did the Kardashians copy the bag?

Botkier certainly thinks so. They released the following statement:

“We just discovered how our Botkier ‘Clyde’ was simply copied by Kardashian Kollection for Sears. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery but we don’t think so…”

Their point is a valid one, but the fact remains that most people who wear Botkier aren’t likely to head to Sears for the Kardashian Kollection, and thus they aren’t losing any potential consumers. So who cares?

Companies like Forever 21, Zara, Steve Madden are “inspired” by high-end designers all the time, thus bringing intricate and modern designs to the masses at an affordable price.

If they aren’t stealing the brand’s name (i.e. fake “Louis Vuitton” bags in Chinatown) and are catering to a different consumer base altogether, then is a lawsuit really necessary?

Do you think Botkier should pursue a case against the Kardashians? Have you ever bought a knockoff?
