Scrap the “Sex”, I Want My “Girlfriends” Back!


From UPTOWNSex and the City is to return to our TV screens after producers met in Hollywood last week to discuss the new show,” or so reports Daily Mail who broke the news Monday.

While the headline might send millions of fans into a blissful frenzy, it frustrates me. SATC is worthy of all the success that it has gained, yet I can’t help but mourn the loss of our fabulous foursome. Not Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte or Miranda. But Joan, Toni, Maya and Lynn: the “Girlfriends”.

There is no short list of Black television shows that were prematurely ripped from the small screen: Soul Food. Sanford and Son. Martin. Living Single. Everybody Hates Chris; I digress. I recognize the injustices that major networks caused these series, but I still have the biggest hole in my heart for Girlfriends. It did for Black women what SATC did for the mainstream audience. Not to mention, it was one of the longest running and highest-rated television shows for African-Americans. Never before had we seen a series so forward, smartly written and positive for Black women– and for that I will forever hold a grudge.
