A Vixen Who Gives Back: Cyndi Lauper To Open A Homeless Shelter for Gay Teens in NYC

Cyndi Lauper is a music and style icon, never afraid of taking risks and pushing the envelope. Now she is pushing the envelope in a different way, opening a homeless shelter for gay teens in New York City.

True Colors Residence is the shelter’s name, aptly titled after her hit song, “True Colors”. Its purpose is to provide housing for gay, bisexual and transgender youth between the ages of 18 and 24 who have been shut out by their families because of their sexuality. Residents will have to pay an affordable amount for rent based on their income, and the shelter will also provide job and career counseling, as well as social support services for those coping with such a momentous transition.

“Kids are coming out in greater numbers as they see themselves accepted and represented on TV and in movies, but they’re still being kicked out of their homes or running away and living on the streets. We need to make sure we’re taking care of them.” – Cyndi Lauper (c) PinkPaper

Such a brave undertaking for a huge segment of the population that really is in need of help and support.

True Colors Residence will open this week on September 9th.
