It’s not everyday a line becomes a trending topic.

But when you’re rapper Royce da 5’9” saying hello to an international celebrity, it only takes a day to make two words one of the most popular tweets worldwide.

A day after the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards, Nickle Nine’s contribution to the Shady 2.0 cypher generated a social media frenzy. Royce stopped by 106 & Park Wednesday to explain the “Hi, Rihanna” line that originated from an overseas performance at the V Festival.

“She [Rihanna] came up to me and told me that she liked one of my songs,” Royce said, rocking a James Dean hoodie during his appearance.

“I just thought it was a line I was gonna say, I didn’t know if she was gonna hear it.”

But millions of users did and tweeted “Hi, Rihanna” to trending topic fame for more than 20 hours. Even the fiery-headed songstress herself responded to Nickle, tweeting “Hi @RoyceDa59.”

When asked how he felt about the response to the cypher, Royce said: “Everybody did their thing, we walked out of there feeling proud.”

Nickle also weighed in on the state of hip-hop, saying “it is way better than it used to be,” giving shout-outs to “superpowers” like Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rick Ross. He even commended artists J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T. and Kendrick Lamar.

The “Lighters” rapper also talked about his upcoming album. His Slaughterhouse group with Crooked I, Joe Budden and Joell Ortiz is currently working on a project, due in early 2012.

There’s no signs of slowing down for Royce’s career as he just received a gold plaque for his Bad Meets Evil album with Eminem last month.

“It’s always good to be recognized,” he said about his success. “You want to look for a reward in anything that you work hard in doing.” –Adelle Platon
