Tyler Perry: Insulting Black Women
From UPTOWN--Last week, Tyler Perry responded to the full on outrage that many Black women expressed over his decision to add Kim Kardashian to the cast of his upcoming movie, “The Marriage Counselor.”
“I could not have imagined I’d be getting all these emails about Kim Kardashian,” he wrote in an open letter. “I HAVE SEEN THEM!! YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD!! …LOL. Now, may I say something? Can a brother get a word in?… LOL. Y’all gave me a new movie title, Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman Cause You Hired Kim Kardashian, Don’t Make Me Take Off My Earrings and Boycott Yo A**.”…LOL. Some of my ladies are upset. Ok, all jokes aside, can I have my say? Will you at least hear me out?”
I think I classify as one of those “proper Negroes “ as Rev. Al Sharpton put it, since I’m not a fan of Perry’s productions. And it has nothing to do with being ashamed of where I come from. Neither of my grandmothers was, and none of my great-aunts are, remotely Madea-esque. I can watch the “Why Did I Get Married?” series because firecracker “Angela” is balanced out by the rest of the cast, but everything else, including “For Colored Girls,” has left me shrugging.
Even before Kim K landed a role, I wasn’t going to see “The Marriage Counselor.” Maybe I’d catch it on the laptop screen at the braid salon someday. Anyway, as I’m not a fan and haven’t put any dollars in Perry’s pocket, I didn’t feel right blasting him about hopping aboard the Kardashian Express since I haven’t been aboard the Perry train thus far. But I do feel entirely okay speaking up about his latest letter, which exemplifies the core issues I have with his brand.
