Amar'e Stoudemire's Brother Killed in Tragic Car Accident
Brother of New York Knicks' star Amar'e Stoudemire was pronounced dead on the scene of a car crash in Lake Wales, FL early Monday morning. Hazell Stoudemire, 35, was speeding down U.S. 27 at approximately 1:42 a.m. when his Cadillac Escalade collided into the back of a tractortrailer, according to police reports. He was not wearing a seatbelt, and died instantly upon impact. Police are still investigating whether he was under the influence.
Upon the news, the star power forward/center rushed back to his native Florida and is not expected to appear in the Knicks' home game against the Utah Jazz tonight. Coach Mike D'Antoni has allowed him the necessary time he needs to cope with the unfortunate situation.
"I know he's very close to his brother so my heart's out for him," D’Antoni said. "He cherishes his family, he does a great job of maintaining all the relationships. Like I said, this is just a trying moment for him."
The Knicks are slated to travel to Washington to play the Wizards on Wednesday, and return to New York to play a home game against the LA Lakers on Friday. The team is uncertain that Amare Stoudemire will play in these games. --Iyana Robertson
