Study Suggests Men Prefer Ladies in Red

Men believe that ladies wearing bold colors, especially red, decreases their risk of rejection.

Who knew?!

A study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology was conducted by scientists to test whether the color of passion made women more attractive to men. In one experiment, researchers asked 96 men from the United States and Austria to rate photos of ladies framed by different color borders. The photographs of women emboldened in red consistently got the co-sign from the fellas.

The men were then shown different photos of women wearing an array of colored shirts and asked how receptive they thought the women might be to their sexual advances. They were also asked how much dough they would shell out of the $100 in their wallets. Women in red got the nod, scoring highly in both responses.

“We find it fascinating that merely changing the color of a woman’s shirt can have such a strong influence on how she is perceived by men,” said Adam Pazda, a social psychologist from the university.

Authors of the study say that the strong reaction to red probably comes from biological instincts rather than just social perception. Even non-human male primates, such as baboons and chimpanzees, have shown an attraction for the bold hue when their female counterparts redden near the beginning of their ovulation cycle, a prime time for sending out sexual signals.

The same men in the study also felt that the women in red would respond positively to their advances. However, ladies, let’s not break out the red lipstick and red bottoms all day everyday just yet.

The authors of the study concluded: “As much as men might like to think that they respond to women in a thoughtful, sophisticated manner, it appears that at least to some degree, their preferences and predilections are, in a word, primitive.” –Adelle Platon
