Battle of the Rap Vixens: Iggy Azalea Vs. Azealia Banks
Beefs within hip-hop have been around forever, and with rappers fighting for the throne, it's clear that as new rappers emerge so will the drama.
The biggest of names of rap--Biggie, 2 Pac, Nas, Jay-Z, Common, Drake, Nicki, Kim--all have engaged in beefs to defend their honor and push some units. Newcomers to the rap game, Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks are no exception to the rule. While beefs once occurred in the booth, Iggy and Azealia have resorted to Twitter to battle for respect and hip-hop honors.
Amongst the two newest female rappers, who is the challenger and who is the contender? Iggy seems to be the perfect example of what hip-hop has become, while Azealia has the perfect story of how rap started and its original essence.
Behind the music, we have Iggy Azalea; the 21-year-old great Australian hype, XXL Freshman Class inductee, Grand Hustle member and girlfriend to A$AP Rocky. Iggy, the daughter of a painter and real estate agent, by no means looks like a contender. But since blowing up on YouTube in 2011, releasing her mixtape Ignorant Art and climbing the ranks under T.I.'s instruction, Iggy has a fighting chance.
Then there's 20-year-old Harlem native, Azealia Banks. The bisexual high school dropout and Interscope artist has been profiled in the New York Times and garnered attention of some of fashions elite, including photographer Terry Richards and designer Karl Lagerfeld. Now a good friend of Lagerfeld, Azaelia was invited her to perform at his home during Paris Fashion Week and hired her to perform in Japan at the Chanel pop-up store after party.
Both rappers undoubtedly have bars, a major fan base and good labels behind their upcoming projects. Where Iggy wins with sex appeal and has no issue showing her (ass)ets, Azealia makes up with a cute face and the support of high fashion royalty.
So what's beef?
Why can't two females champion together, plan a feminist hip-hop takeover and become a real life "Ren & Ten," The Hip-Hop Dalmatians? Well, because since the release of the XXL freshman cover, Azealia has challenged Iggy position in the game with accusations of racism and questioning her rivals choice of off-hand lyrics. Not to be bullied, Iggy barked back disputing the claims of being racist, insinuating jealousy as Azealia's motives. Her boss T.I. and boyfriend, A$AP Rocky, even speak out in her defense.
We've had "Iggy's" before, most recently with Kreayshawn, who could have arguably paved the way for Iggy by allowing us to accept a cute white female rapper and feel comfortable enough to openly acknowledge that she can spit. We've also had "Azealia's" who've used their street image and gritty lyrics to achieve mainstream fame with high fashion appeal, only to fizzle out once the next girl arrives with something more to offer.
No matter how young and how big the differences are between Iggy and Azealia, in an overcrowded industry, there just may not be enough space for two new female rappers.
While we hate to see females resort to beef, if you had to judge who would win this battle of the Vixens?
