Solange Knowles Talks Spring Fashion and Online Shopping in ‘Time Out NY’

While Beyoncé and Blue Ivy stroll the streets in matching mommy-daughter cat slippers, Bey’s little sis Solange Knowles takes over Time Out New York magazine.

The 25-year old singer-actress, styled with a cute coif and a vibrant multi-colored sundress, brings the psychedelic pop back on her latest cover. While her recent wardrobe selections have been getting everyone’s attention, the younger Knowles is not interested in becoming a fashion designer or big-time model.

“I’ve been clear I just want to express myself. I’m really appreciative for the love and respect [from the fashion community], but I just want to do the fun shit,” she said. “I’m a lot more interested in style than fashion—style is what makes us who we are.”

She cited Erykah Badu, Björk, Diana Ross and her mother, stylist Tina Knowles as her biggest fashion influences, saying that timeless beauty is “where I’d like to be.”

The photos show a happy woman, decked out in a range of labels from high-end Diane Von Furstenberg skirts to easily accessible H&M accessories and Uniqlo knit cardigans. Regardless, she doesn’t shy away from the eye-popping colors sure to dominate the spring season.

She also confessed to giving her sister bad advice about online shopping. A New York Premier member on online boutique Net-A-Porter, Knowles relishes in having her purchases mailed to her the same day she orders. “I made the biggest mistake of introducing that to my sister, and she’s just been out of control.”

While the Texas native acclimates to her new New York home, the fashionista is hard at work, preparing for her first independent record due summer, which she says is influenced by ‘80s R&B, pop and soul with more complex songwriting. She aims to maintain musical integrity, saying, “I hope 25 years from now, my son can look at the pop stars [of today] and have that same feeling that I have when I listen to Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey records, and experience that timelessness of just good songs.”
