Designer to Watch: Maki Oh
Amaka Osakwe, a Nigerian fashion designer, is one name you should get used to hearing in the evolving fashion industry. Ms. Osakwe is the creator of the African fashion brand, Maki Oh.
In Fall 2010, she presented her first collection titled, “Everything in Proportion”. The 12 piece collection featured silhouettes inspired by Ghana, voluminous draped shorts, body conscious garments with cutouts, and hand woven silk chiffon. “Everything in Proportion” celebrated traditional African techniques and celebrated the influence that award winning Nigerian artist, Niki Okundaye.
Her second collection for Fall 2011 was inspired by classical pianist, Ludovico Einaudi's song titled “Love is a Mystery”. Geometric prints, mixture of fabrics, sheer, velvet, and structured shapes dominated her line last year.
She revealed her Fall 2012 collection during Arise Magazine’s Fashion Week and was awarded “Designer of the Year”.
For autumn 2012, she experimented with lace, risqué cuts, whimsical prints, and muted hues. Motivated by Matisse’s painting of primitive odalisques and Largo reds, she created show-stopping garments like her button up shirt, elegant sheer dresses, T-shirt dress, minidresses, and plenty of garments with velvet embellishments.
Maki Oh’s designs challenge the normal notions of beauty. Maki Oh is a refreshing brand within the international fashion industry that showcases a complex outlook on sustainable fashions.
Solange Knowles has fallen in love with the Nigerian designer’s latest collection. At the Splendid Soho Store opening party, Solange wore a black velvet skirt including a thigh-high split with a sexy lace panel by Maki Oh that was presented during Arise Fashion Week.
The Maki Oh woman represents a strong sense of identity and conveys a message with each piece she wears.
