Jay-Z’s Brooklyn Nets Unveil New Logo Design


The Nets just moved one step closer to Brooklyn.

In its latest teaser for expectant NBA fans, the Nets’ logo has been revamped, much like the team’s business and location. Released today, the clean black and white design features slim san-serif font with a capital “B” etched into a basketball. Part-owner and proud Brooklyn native Jay-Z played an influential role in the logo’s new design.

“The Brooklyn Nets logos are another step we’ve made to usher the organization into a new era,” Jay-Z said in a statement to ESPN. “The boldness of the designs demonstrate the confidence we have in our new direction. Along with our move to Brooklyn and a state-of-the-art arena, the new colors and logos are examples of our commitment to update and refine all aspects of the team.”

The logo was presented at the Modell’s Sporting Goods store across the street from the nearly complete $1 billion Barclays Center where the Brooklyn Nets will play this upcoming 2012-2013 season. Neither Jay nor majority owner Mikhail Prokhorov were in attendance for the event. According to a spokesperson, Prokhorov approves of the design, which was originally conceived a year ago. While t-shirts and other apparel are available now, official jerseys will not be released until this fall.

The Nets center Brook Lopez expressed excitement for his team’s pilgrimage to the city. “Hello Brooklyn! I’ve been waiting a long time to say that,” he said.
As the second Brooklyn official sports team since the Brooklyn Dodgers, hopefully this transition will bring better fortune for the team, which closed out the season with a six-game losing streak and a 22-44 record.

“They’ll get it done. They were unlucky last season, and it didn’t help that they were playing in a temporary arena and about to make a move,” NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said. “Cementing their identity in Brooklyn, I believe, will help in player recruitment as well.”
