Kanye West Premieres 'Cruel Summer' at Cannes
An impressive seven-screen art display of Kanye West’s short film “Cruel Summer” lit up the Cannes Film Festival this past Wednesday (May 24) night.
Inspired by the G.O.O.D. Music compilation due this season, West squeezed about 200 viewers into an exclusive tent-like venue attended by the likes of his co-Throne holder, Jay-Z and main squeeze Kim Kardashian.
The film stars rapper/actor Kid Cudi as a car thief who falls for a blind woman. According to MTV News, the seven screens alternated in showing different views of the main scene. West introduced his latest masterpiece by saying, “It related to a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era, where we're always on our BlackBerry in a ball game or at the movies," West's quoted as saying. "I was very particular about having the screens separate, where your mind puts the screens back together, the way you put memories together.”
Cudi also told MTV News that seeing himself on seven different screens was dope. “It was weird! But it was dope,” the "Day 'N Night" rapper said. “I’m nervous, just like with anything I do, with people watching, but I’m really proud of it. I’m happy that Kanye had me as part of it. It’s so humbling. He’s a genius, he’s the best, the illest … you can quote me on that!”
As expected, the movie’s score was impressive. GQ Senior Editor Logan Hill said the music was “the best part — big complex production, huge beats.” Members of the G.O.O.D. Music clan provide the soundtrack.
In the same fashion as his 2010 “Runaway” music video, Yeezy’s half-hour movie read like an extended music video with little dialogue and musical concentration. The script was based on a screenplay by Elot Rutberg, who was responsible for the “N*ggas in Paris” visuals.
Don’t hold your breath for the film to come to a theater or computer screen near you, though. The film is reported to screen on Nov. 19 in Doha, the largest city in Qatar, at the Doha Film Institute, who collaborated with West for the project.
