Vixen Chat: Yandy Smith Talks Pregnancy, Her Private Relationship and Missy Elliott

Last October, Vixen introduced readers to Yandy Smith: a proverbial peacemaker and business woman, whose main focus was her job and doing it to the best of her ability. Fast forward to today, and a lot has changed since her introduction to the world via Love & Hip-Hop. Yandy has cashed in on her celebrity and has walked away with opportunities in film production, an increasingly popular accessories line and new management ventures. But, none of these endeavors compare to her most recent journey, which has currently been into the realm of motherhood.

With a little under two months left until her due date, Yandy is ready to tackle this new experience, but questions her ability to balance a baby and a briefcase. But, whatever happens, this maverick promises to step out on faith, believing she’ll figure it out.

Smith chats about her pregnancy, her work with Missy Elliot, the ups and downs of reality television and more!

The last time we spoke, you were wrapping up production on Love & Hip-Hop. How do you feel after taping as well as watching yourself on the show?
I can’t say it wasn’t me. It was completely me. Every little bit of it was me. I wish they were able to go into a little more of who I am as a person and see some more of my characteristics, but I was very careful because I didn’t want my personal life exploited and on the show. I wanted it to be focused on business, but the way it turned out; it was focused on business either. I guess if I gave in a little on the personal side, all of the drama wouldn’t have been necessary.

If you were asked to, would you come back for a second season?
I probably would, if the money was right. If it’s something that my significant other wanted to do, I would do it. You know, because I have a family now and I wouldn’t want to put the message out there of raising this baby by myself since I’m not. So, it would have to be a family decision now since there’s more to my life and my family since taping the show previously.

As of date, you’ve been doing a lot of work with Missy Elliot. What can fans expect from her next studio album?
The album is incredible. Her and Timbaland came together and joined forces on this album. It’s like Missy and Tim reunited times three because it’s extra dope. It has some new flavor to it then a little of the old school funk to it. It’s crazy. They put their asses in it. They did the damn thing.

When can we expect that to drop?
I don’t want to give a date yet, because everything has to align, all of the ducks have to be in a row. We do have a possible date, but it all depends on when the single comes out as well, and how everything goes. There are a lot of factors that go into putting a Missy project out. So, I don’t want to say anything, and then I have the Missy stans coming for me when it’s not that deep [laughs]. It’s definitely in the near future when you’ll be hearing a single, a very near future.

What has been going with Everything Girls Love? Can we expect a new collection soon?
Everything Girls Love is doing very well, especially the magazine. On the jewelry front, everything is consistently going well. We’re adding new products every month. We recently added a lip gloss line called Embellish. We’re also doing jewelry shows around the East Coast. We had a couple jewelry shows this past month.

Tami Roman graced the last cover, what do you think of her whole stint on this season of Basketball Wives, especially after being labeled as an “adult bully” towards the end?
I can’t really speak for Basketball Wives, but I know with our show, a lot of times things were one-sided. People on my show were calling me the Don King of reality TV because it looked like I was setting fights up. Like I was setting Kimbella up when Chrissy [Lampkin] fought her, and I set Kimbella up with Erica [Mena]. A lot of times, it was situation I didn’t even know we were walking into. I happen to know Tami personally and she’s a really sweet person. I can’t speak about what Tami has done, because I know reality TV and I know how editing works.

If the participants know this about the editing style, why do you think they all keep coming back?
The positive by far outweighs the negative. I look at how much it’s done for my brand, my Everything Girls Love brand, how I’ve been able to become a writer for Black Enterprise, how many people request me to manage them, even the money I’ve been able to save. I basically have my son’s college tuition saved and that’s just from club hosting. I didn’t spend any of that money. I put it in the bank for him, so when I look at that, it’s great! I can’t take anything away from the opportunities it’s afforded me.

How has everything been going since your big pregnancy reveal?
As we speak, we’re getting the nursery together. It’s been a little crazy it the house. I’ve been driving my honey crazy. I’ve been reading up, where the last couple of months you get into this nesting mode where if everything’s not in order you go crazy. So, I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. I just need the room to be ready and the house in order.

How has the experience been like overall?
It’s been great! People talk about the emotional this and that. I’ve been super happy! I haven’t had an emotional breakdown. The emotional breakdown is coming because it’s getting closer. I haven’t been able to sleep. I won’t be able to sleep unless this nursery is in order. It’s so much to think about and so much to do, but I love it. I love the special treatment I’m getting. I get back rubs and foot massages. I get breakfast cooked sometimes if he doesn’t have to work, so it’s been okay. It’s been good, really good.

Are you having a boy or a girl?
I’m having a little boy!

You’re a fairly private person when it comes to your personal life. Do you plan to continue to keep your relationship with your baby's father private?
In due time, it will reveal itself. Stay tuned to Twitter, Instagram, Love & Hip-Hop. I think it was important to establish myself as a business women first and not a woman who’s attached to a man. I love him tremendously and he’s been a support during the taping of the show and when I managed him initially. He’s been great. He’s been a great supporter. You know, the media and everyone else, they make up so many things and they can be so cruel, so I kind of wanted to shield him from that. Putting him out there, the baby out there, it’s just a lot that you have to think about. People are harsh and people are cruel.

How was it sharing your pregnancy with Kimbella? You two are pretty close already.
It was so fun. I couldn’t have picked a better situation. Any questions I had, she could answer. Every single thing I go through, I could call and ask her if this is normal or did you go through this. Even with our men. Is yours doing this or eating this or sleeping a lot? We’re going through a lot of the same things physically and within our relationships, so it’s been pretty fun to have a partner in crime.

What’s the most important piece of advice you’ve received about motherhood?
It’s from my mom really. She just says this is the time when you cannot control anything that happens. You have to put everything that you know; leave it out the door, but you put your faith and trust in God and that is it. I couldn’t determine what my baby’s sex was going to be. I can’t determine if my baby will come out full term or premature. I can’t determine if everything will come out perfect. I’m a control freak and a worry wart, so she said, 'You have to stop worrying. You have to stop trying to control this. Just let God do his thing.' That has been some really good advice.

Kelly Rowland Says Her Highly-Anticipated Project Is "Definitely Coming"

Six years ago, Kelly Rowland released her fourth studio album titled Talk a Good Game. The project boasted hit singles like "Kisses Down Low" and the transparent "Dirty Laundry." Now, the Houston native is preparing to release a project that'll surely satisfy fans' patient earbuds.

In an interview with Billboard, Rowland shared her hopes for putting out a new body of work and the pressure that she's encountered since she's been in the studio. "This is by far the longest, most pressure-filled process ever, only because I know what it's supposed to be and I have been so hard on myself. I know it," she said. "And it's the first time I've said it out loud. I've been extremely hard on myself. But it's definitely coming, and I'm more so excited about this project than anything else."

The news follows the recent release of Rowland's "Kelly" track, which was met with critical acclaim in November 2018. In addition to preparing the release of new music, the "Motivation" singer discussed fans' wish for a Destiny's Child reunion. The rumors have been fueled by social media photographs of Rowland with either Beyonce or Michelle or all three, especially during Beyonce's past Coachella performance. But Rowland assures readers that it's not what they think.

"It's so funny. I guess every time people see us together, they just see music but I see sisterhood, and that's what we are and that's what me, her, Michelle [Williams] and Solange and I are. People see us all together, they immediately think music. I'm like, no. Just family." As Rowland previously mentioned Solange, she hopes to one day work with her again.

"I'm a huge fan," she said. "I love her writing and how detailed and particular she is. I always wanted to figure out how the heck she has so many different layers of harmonies when she is constructing these vocals, and it's so complex but simple. It's genius. It's the genius in her genius mind that she has in there." One of the last times the pair collaborated was on Rowland's "Simply Deep" track off her debut solo album of the same name. Solange also penned a few songs off the same project. Fast forward to 2016, and Rowland's vocals were featured on Solange's iconic A Seat at the Table.

Teyana Taylor To Pay Homage To Ballroom Culture In "WTP" Video

Teyana Taylor aims to keep her hot streak of innovative videos coming thanks to this recent announcement. Taking to Instagram on Wednesday (Jan. 9), the "Gonna Love Me" singer will show adoration to ballroom culture in the visual for "WTP."

Directed by Gregory "Beef" Jones, The Aunties Inc., and Taylor herself, the Harlemite takes viewers on her journey to the expression-filled space where she hopes to rack up 10s across the board from a group of judges. The premise of the video also seems to follow a mockumentary format airing on a fictional network named FEMTV. Alongside Taylor, other men and women get ready to display their talents and confidence on the ballroom floor.

"WTP" is featured on the mother-of-one's sophomore album, K.T.S.E., which was released in June 2018. While the rollout's controversy didn't entirely muddle the excitement behind the project's debut, Taylor said she was sold on the idea that her album would be treated as the biggest out of G.O.O.D. Music's string of releases last year.

"I didn't know ahead of time that there wouldn't be any singles or visuals. But I knew that it was going to be the five-album thing," she said during a HOT 97 interview. "[Kanye] wanted [my album] to be last, he wanted mine to be the biggest. That's the way they sauced it up. I was sold."

The video will debut on Jan. 19. Check out the teaser below.

Trina Braxton’s Ex-Husband, Gabe Solis, Dies After Battle With Cancer

Gabe Solis, the ex-husband of Trina Braxton, lost his battle with cancer, Thursday (Dec. 20),  TMZ reports. He was 43.

Solis passed away at his home in Texas, surrounded by friends and family, according to the outlet. No official details have been released about his passing.

Solis had reportedly been keeping his cancer battle private. His death came as a shock to his loved ones. On Friday (Dec. 21), Braxton seemingly mourned the loss of her ex-husband with a cryptic Instagram meme reading, “I need a hug..E bottle of wine.”

The former couple tied the knot in 2003, and appeared together on previous seasons of WEtv’s Braxton Family Values. Despite finalizing their divorce in 2015, Braxton and Solis confronted lingering issues from their marriage during an episode of Iyanla: Fix My Life, earlier in the year.

Braxton has since moved on to a new relationship, but remained friends with Solis.
