Miracle Baby Born After Mother Escapes Colorado Shooting
Out of every tragedy lies a tiny miracle.
According to NBC news, Hugo Jackson Medley was born Tuesday after his mother, Katie Medley, escaped the Colorado shootings that took place last week. University of Colorado Hospital spokesman Dan Weaver said both mother and child are in good health.
Though Katie fled the scene uninjured, her husband, Caleb, is in the same hospital in a medically-induced coma after being shot in the face at the Aurora movie theatre. He lost his right eye and suffered brain damage.
Prior to the shooting, the two high school sweethearts were avid Batman fans and decided to have one 'last date night' before their baby was born. Katie, who was nine months pregnant, and Caleb, an aspiring comedian, knew they could not miss opening night of 'Dark Knight Rises.'
"They had Batman apparel on. They waited for this movie for over a year,” said David Sanchez, Katie Medley’s father.
When the shooter pulled the trigger during the screening, the soon-to-be-parents thought it was a joke. “I thought it was a prank at first or someone playing along with the movie,” Katie's friend Michael West wrote on a dedication site to Caleb, recounting a conversation he had with her. “Then he opened fire.”
While Sanchez blames shooting suspect Holmes for ruining the most joyous part of his daughter's life, he says the family's priority is the baby and Caleb. "He's in critical but stable condition, so we're praying for him. I think the main concern is him right now, and the baby being born.”
To make matters worse, the couple does not have medical insurance and asks for any donations here.
