The Braxton’s Talk About The New Season, Business Ventures and More
Speaking of your music, how was the recording process for your album?
Trina: It was super fun because I did music that I wanted to do. Music that depicts who Trina is as a person, it’s party music, it’s fun, it’s bubbly. Just indicative of who Trina really is. I thought it was really important for me to branch out and do my kind of music and not just what people expected of me. I’m sure people are used to me being with The Braxtons and me singing R&B music and people think that because I’m doing this kind of music that I’m selling out, but why do I have to stay in this box that you created for me?
What artists or other music influenced inspired the album?
Trina: I hate to say it but Britney Spears, Crystal Waters, Trina Braxton [laughs]. I’m not trying to be funny but I inspired myself because I wanted to do something that, not just belonged to me, but that represented me. If I’m doing a type of music because someone else thinks I should do it, it’s not going to work. It’s going to be fake, phony and fraudulent and it won’t be fun for me.
Looking at the men you’re attracted to, Gabe and then I read that you have a crush on Jake Gyllenhal, is it safe to say Trina has a type?
Tamar: What?!?! Trina doesn’t even like chocolate ice cream!
Trina: I don’t. I don’t have anything against anyone else, but everyone has a preference. Everyone has a type, and that just so happens to be my type now my type might change if Tyler Perry came and knocked on my door and asked me out on a date. I would say “Tyler, yes.” Before my name even fully came out of his mouth. [laughs]
Tamar, you were one of our cover girls for the “Meet Your New Role Models” issue, that was a very controversial cover, people were saying that didn’t consider you ladies role models. Do you feel any pressure to live up to a certain image now? Be more dramatic?
Tamar: No not at all. Those were just people’s opinions, but speaking on my opinion, I don’t feel like I have represented myself in any negative way, nor will I ever. I don’t believe in fighting, I don’t believe in sitting around cursing females out. I just believe in using my words. I’m outspoken, I’m not apologizing for that. I think that is a great thing for a woman to be. If that’s not what you want your role model to be, that’s on you.
Evelyn was on the cover with you, and all of this stuff is now going on with her and Chad [domestic abuse]. Do you feel like her portrayal on TV might have lead up to this? A lot of critics say that this is karma because she “bullied” people.
Tamar: I think that is so asinine to say. She wasn’t sitting around fighting men on TV, I’m just sayin. This is her husband and I just think that everyone should stay out of it and let her figure out what she needs to figure out. Her and her husband broke up, her brother- in- law just died the other day, it’s a lot going on. And I just feel like it’s insensitive for us to keep commenting, unless she wants to say something.
Trina: Relationships are hard enough as it is, and she’s living it out on national television. This is just a really difficult time for her and people need to let her have this time and be very respectful.
Tamar: Because it can happen to either one of us, and it would be very devastating. We just need to pray for her.
Ms. E: Because no one deserves to be abused. I don’t care what she’s saying on television. That does not give anyone the right to fight her. Maybe he said he loves her, but anything you say you love, you’re not going to abuse. In essence you’re going to protect it. I think that his definition of love is totally discombobulated, I don’t know him but no, she does not deserve that.
Tamar: That’s not karma.
