The Crookers ‘Bowser’ EP – Bouncey Grooves Gone Schizo

Italian duo The Crookers are pioneering heroes of nu-wave electro from late in the last decade, pushing the sound barriers in noisy new ‘maximal’ directions, the kind of glorious over-the-top maniacal beats heard from the likes of Steve Aoki when he’s behind the decks. For this, their first release on A-Trak’s Fools Gold label, there’s a little more method to the madness, in tune with the class you’d expect from A-Trak himself.

“Trillex” comes packed with shrill, high-pitched synths, indicating the intention of crafting a few bangers on this 3-track EP. There’s a bouncy groove that leads the song into plenty of schizophrenic, dark corners, though for The Crookers it’s still remarkably restrained. Bowser kicks off with some old-school electro breaks, before jumping head first into the madness again, with a bass-line heavy enough to shake the walls.

Meanwhile, “Turn The Lights On” will no doubt tickle the fancy of VIBE readers; its a collaboration with Philadelphia rapper STS AKA ‘Sugar Tongue Slim’, who helps the Italian noise merchants instill the tune with a distinct southern flow.

Worth a look for those interested in how The Crookers are growing up a bit, while still keeping things mad as hell.
