13-Year-Old Girl Shot On School Bus

Mystery surrounds the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old girl who was killed in front of her sister and several other students on a school bus, according to Miami-Dade police.

A 15-year-old male student, whose name was not released, is currently in custody and being interrogated after a gun was retrieved from the scene of the crime Tuesday, CBS News reports. Eight other children were on the bus, including the victim’s 7-year-old sister, who were not harmed in the attack.

“We still don’t know what the motive may have been,” said police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta. An arrest report said the teen took the weapon from his backpack and began showing it on the bus when he fired it once and hit Guzman. She was then airlifted to a Miami hospital, where she died.

The victim, Lourdes Guzman, attended charter middle school Palm Glades Preparatory Academy. Her sister went to nearby Summerville Advantage Academy. The shooting occurred about seven minutes away from the victim’s school.

Concerned parents gathered at the crime scene, including Fabio Otero, whose son was at an eight-grader at Palm Glades, says he was shaken up by the killing and considering enrolling his son at a different school. “I was stunned! I was stunned!” he told Yahoo! News. “That hits really close to home. That’s just scary.”
