Alicia Keys Mends Relationship with Estranged Father
They say daddy issues can have a major effect on a woman's life. Superstars are no exception.
This year, we were introduced to the new Alicia Keys: loving wife, doting mother to baby Egypt and a "girl on fire." However, it wasn't until reuniting with her biological father, Craig Cook, that her dream of happiness was fully realized.
"The process started when my [paternal] grandmother became ill," she tells Britain's You Magazine. "You realize what's important when you see a person you love dearly and you're not going to have them for long. It was important to her. And I saw [my father's] love for her. I realized he wasn't an evil person so I said, 'Can we start from this point on? Can we be friends? I can start to understand you and you can start to understand me.'"
She also touches on life back when her mother Teresa was forced to take care of the family on her own. And even after garnering a successful career in music and film, the pain of having an absentee father still lingered. Today, it's their bond over Egypt that has healed past wounds and created a bright future for father and daughter. "I think something happens when you become a grandparent. You have a different mind-set. There's less pressure on the relationship, so maybe it's closer. He was with Egypt last week and he loved it."--Nicole Brown
