10 Tips for Battling Relationship Insecurities
No, we're not crazy. No, we're not delusional. And we're not overreacting. We are women. And we are emotional creatures, especially when it comes to the opposite sex.
In any relationship, we have to deal with modern day challenges whether it's friends with benefits, online dating or my favorite: an open relationship. When meeting a man for the first time, putting up a front is natural. But if your insecurities continue to linger, it may be time to say goodbye. If you're in for the long haul, follow these simple steps. - Nicole Brown
1. Feel Good About Yourself
Sometimes it's you, not him. Inner confidence is paramount and if you don't have it, both your professional and personal life will suffer.
2. Admit You Have Insecurities
The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. This common mantra for addicts can be applied to relationships. Your man won't understand you if he doesn't know there's a problem.
3. Pay Attention to What He Did Before You Were A Couple
Once the union is official, a lot of women want their man to drop everything to be with them. Think back on what he did before the "us." If he watched football with his friends every Sunday, don't jump down his throat asking him why he isn't with you.
4. Talk About Your Past
Most trust issues stem from past relationships. His dealing with an old lover, could explain his current behavior.
5. Meet His Friends
It's important to have your own set of friends, but there's no harm in getting to know his as well—both male and female. You will feel more comfortable when he's not with you.
6. Set Ground Rules in the Beginning
Not everyone's definition of a monogamous relationship is the same. If both parties lay out their expectations in the beginning, there will be less issues later.
7. Have Outside Interests
It's easy to become insecure when your entire life revolves around your boyfriend. Having your own set of friends and hobbies leaves little time for you to freak out.
8. Don't Snoop Unless You Have Reason To
The only thing worse than catching a man doing you dirty is finding out he actually isn't and feeling bad after. There's no reason to go into his email or hack his phone if he's acting normal.
9. Don't Let the Relationship Progress Too Far Without Addressing Issues
Speak now or forever hold your peace! Your boyfriend won't take you seriously if you bring up an incident that happened months ago. And chances are he won't remember it anyway.
10. Work Out
Elle Woods says it best: "Exercise releases endorphins. Endorphins make you happy." Take your frustration out on the treadmill. It will also give you time to think before you speak. And you'll look good doing it too!
