Elle Varner Talks Grammy Nod and Engagement Rumors
Grammy-nominated songstress and current VIBE Vixen cover girl Elle Varner phoned into Philly's Power 99 to chop it up with Mina on "SayWhat" discuss her big-time nod and set the record straight on her engagement.
While currently touring the country with Miguel and Trey Songz, who she faces off in the best category for Best R&B Song in the 2013 Grammys, Elle says there's no bad blood between the three of them. "I know that wheoever wins, we'll all be so happy for each other," she says. "We're a big family. It's all love, whoever wins."
As far as her tweeted photo of a ring on her finger, the "I Don't Care" singer blames it all on a nap. "I put on my grandma's ring and the plan was, 'I'm gonna tweet this, saying I can't believe it, my nana let me try on this ring, she's so stingy, ahnd it went to draft [cause of] bad service at my mom's," she explains. "So I said whatever, woke up and it had sent but I never sent the follow-up!"
The photo also fueled some backlash from fans that she was engaged to a white man. "That was such a let-down. My grandparents got married inter-racially during the Civil Rights movement where people were threatening their lives, she reveals. "They put so much on the line for their bond and stayed married till my grandmother passed [for] 50-something years. To have people now in 2013 practically still talking about it [like] where did that come from?"
