Miguel Talks About The Impact Of Being Nominated For A “Song Of The Year” Grammy Award

Getting nominated for a Grammy Award is a really big deal. It’s a cliche at this point, but even if you don’t walk away with a Grammy trophy at the annual awards ceremony, simply being nominated can change an artist’s career. Instead of labeling themselves as “singers” or “producers” or “rappers,” musicians can label themselves as “Grammy Award-nominated artists” after they’ve been nominated for an award. But, it sounds like R&B singer Miguel didn’t realize the impact of being nominated for a Grammy Award until recently.

Last month, he received five nominations from Grammy voters, including one for “Song of the Year” for his chart-topping hit, “Adorn.” And, during a recent interview with the Associated Press, Miguel talked about just how important he now realizes that nomination is to his career.

“Interestingly I’ve only more recently realized how big of a deal it is,” he said. “I think it’s nothing short of a blessing. I’m like, ‘Wow. Of the year? Of the year? Really?'”

And, while he may struggle to walk away with that award thanks to some stiff competition from Carly Rae Jepsen, fun., and Kelly Clarkson, Miguel does have a good chance of walking away with at least one award during the 55th Grammy Awards on February 10. “Adorn” was also nominated in the “Best R&B Song” and “Best R&B Performance” categories for “Adorn,” while his latest album, Kaleidoscope Dream, was nominated for “Best Urban Contemporary Album.” He’ll also collect a Grammy if Wale manages to snag one for “Best Rap Song” for his hit, “Lotus Flower Bomb.”

But, even if Miguel doesn’t win a single Grammy Award this time around, we doubt this will be his last trip to the awards show. As he told the AP, he’s in a much better place with his music these days than he was back in 2010 when he released his debut, All I Want Is You.

“I trusted myself so much more this time,” he said. “I just felt a lot sturdier and kind of went with my gut on a lot of things. I had a good idea, but I don’t know if I knew how to convey the idea the best way and the most honest way, and it took that first album for me to learn the ropes.”

Now that he knows them, we expect plenty of other nominations in the future—and a few wins along the way as well.
