Recap: Did Trinidad James Rock the Spot?
Trinidad James came out of the gate with a hit in “All Gold Everything,” but last night in NYC, the rapper proved that he has a ways to go before wearing the hip-hop crown.
The overnight sensation performed to a sold-out audience that included Busta Rhymes, various media, Rap Radar honcho Paul Rosenberg and the entire org chart of Def Jam Records (Trinidad’s new label which signed him to a reportedly million-dollar deal last year). In a varsity jacket, neon-hued bucket hat and his signature Trinidad flag, Trinidad rapped nearly his entire Don’t Be S.A.F.E. album like the opener “Tonk For The Money” and “One More Molly.” Very quickly, it was apparent that the crowd had downloaded the tape one song and one song only, “All Gold Everything.” Despite moderate attempts at amping up the vibe, Trinidad couldn’t engage the audience aside from the requisite line in "All Gold Everything," “Popped a molly, I’m sweating. Woo.”
NYC fans are notoriously tough, especially to out-of-town artists. The venue SOB’s is known as a breeding ground for burgeoning artists and has hosted new talent like Drake, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole in the past. In all fairness, the same show in say, Trinidad's hometown Atlanta may have garnered a different, “turnt up” response. The rapper was aware of the discerning, concrete jungle he was stepping into, and seemed grateful for the opportunity to just be there. After performing “All Gold Everything” twice, he thanked the audience for having him. "You don't gotta turn up with me. You don't have to, but you did and I thank you for that…I appreciate y'all for giving me a chance.”
