'Blade Runner' Pistorius Officially Charged with Murder of Girlfriend
Superstar Olympic runner and double-amputee Oscar "Blade Runner" Pistorius has been charged with murder after his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp was found dead in his Pretoria, South Africa home. The sports star is most noted for competing with two carbon fiber prosthetic blades.
Police arrived at the scene early Thursday morning (Feb. 14) to paramedics attempting to revive Steenkamp, who had been shot four times. A 9-millimeter handgun was recovered at the scene, with
Pistorius and Steenkamp being the only two identified in the home according to police spokesman Denise Beukes. Beukes also told reporters that the couple has a history of incidents, and that there are witness in this most recent case. After being questioned, Pistorius was taken into custody.
"We are talking about neighbors and people that heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place," she said. "I can confirm that there has previously been incidents at the home of Mr Oscar Pistorius, of allegations of domestic nature."
Pistorius has a known relationship with guns, according to several reports. The Olympic runner is a gun owner and enjoys target practice in his spare time. He told the New York Times Magazine that
he enjoys target shooting "just sometimes when I can't sleep." Speculations have been made that the shooting was an accident by Pistorius, who may have thought that Steenkamp was an intruder. No signs of forced entry into the home have been found, however.
Police are continuing investigations and Pistorius is set to appear in court on Friday (Feb. 15).
"It would be very premature and very irresponsible of me to say what actually has happened," Beukes said. "There have been allegations. We are not sure."
