Get To Know: Carly Rae Jepsen

The new girl at the Grammys gave ladies everywhere the balls to make the first move. Here’s the rundown on the “Call Me Maybe” chick whose name you’ll definitely know by the end of the night

NAME: Carly Rae Jepsen | BIRTHDATE: November 21, 1985 | HOMETOWN: Mission, B.C., Canada
OCCUPATION: Singer, Interscope Records
Musical epiphany: I sang [The Bangles’] “Eternal Flames” in a local talent show with my dad accompanying me on the guitar, and I won! I remember feeling terrified and exhilarated, but I knew I wanted to spend my life doing it
Biggest style influence: The Olsen twins
Craziest “Call Me Maybe” remix: The Cookie Monster
Kitchen specialty: I love sushi. Crab, avocado, mango—pretty much anything in my fridge goes in my sushi rolls
Childhood obsession: I went through this phase where I collected miniature [furniture figurines]—bathtubs, chairs. It was really strange
Artists on my iPod: Estelle, Van Morrison, Robyn, Fun.
Most coveted superpower: To fly
Biggest splurge: I got my parents a big holiday retreat
Worst pickup line: “Hey, I just met you. And this is crazy…”
Why I’m about to blow: At 19, I was like, If this doesn’t work out, I’m still going to be happy pursuing this life, even if it means waitressing by day and working a coffee shop gig where I can perform at night. Then there was a twist of fate in my life—Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun taking [my music] on. I want people to feel happy, to move, sing along and dance. It could be getting-ready-to-go-out, driving-in-the-car music. I love that idea that I can be part of people’s lives. —Adelle Platon
