Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake & Skrillex Early Winners at the 2013 Grammys
The surprises (and upsets) started early at the 2013 Grammys. Several winners were announced during the Grammy pre-telecast held at the Nokia Theater adjacent to the Staples Center where the big show will start later in the evening.
In the rap categories, Jay-Z and Kanye West, the latter who infamously bashed the awards show at a recent gig, won the Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performace trophies for their Watch the Throne single "N****s In Paris." They beat out fellow rappers like Nas, Young Jeezy, Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg and Drake. Drake did however bounce back winning the coveted Best Rap Album Grammy for his second album Take Care. The Young Money rapper beat out Nas, The Roots, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz and Lupe Fiasco for the big win. The night is looking grim for Nas. Nominated for 18 Grammys in his career, he's already lost out on three of his four nominations for the evening.
After winning Best R&B Song with the baby-making "Adorn," Miguel told the Grammys that it felt like it was a "dreams realized" moment. Other R&B winners included Beyonce, who won her 17th Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance with the 4 track "Love on Top." Usher also took home Grammy No. 8 for Best R&B Performance with "Climax."
Other early bird winners included Gotye and Kimbra who took home two Grammys for the ubiquitous 2012 single, "Somebody That I Use to Know," but are still up for Record of the Year later in the night. Rockers the Black Keys already have two 2013 Grammys under their belts -- Best Rock Album (El Camino) and Best Rock Song ("Lonely Boy.") One-half of the duo Dan Auerbach took home the Producer of the Year Grammy
Rihanna was also an early winner in the Best Short Form Music Video category for "We Found Love" feat. Calvin Harris, while veteran reggae singer Jimmy Cliff won the Best Reggae Album Grammy for his first album in eight years, Rebirth.
Skrillex took home three Grammys during the pre-show: Best Dance Recording ("Bangarang"), Best Dance/ Electronica Album (Bangarang), Best Remixed Recording, Non Classical ("Promises (& Nero Remix)." And, the 55th Grammys haven't even started yet...
