Monica Praises Nicki Minaj for Citing Her As Fashion Role Model in Elle Magazine: ‘It’s Extremely Humbling’
For her new spread in ELLE magazine, the first lady of Young Money flaunted her au naturel beauty, posing in minimal makeup and killer designer threads à la Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen. But she also name-dropped a well-known songstress that she deemed a style icon.
“My favorite singer [as a girl] was Monica,” Minaj tells the fashion glossy. “Her clothes and her shoes always looked expensive, and I felt like I could never afford what she was wearing.”
Monica, whose style transformation has left a mark on many ladies throughout the years, is flattered by the salute. “It’s extremely humbling to be thought of and remembered by a woman and artist like Nicki because she has done some amazing things in her career thus far,” she told Vixen.
“It touched my heart that songs I sang meant something to her because when I sing, I sing for the people and the young women like me. Music saved my life, and I know Nicki can relate to the love and passion for the music.”
The “Angel of Mine” singer also revealed her favorite song from the female spitter. “My favorite song by Nicki is ‘Moment For Life.’ There have been many moments that God blessed me with that I wanted to feel forever.”
She even gave Nicki kudos for her leopard 2011 Grammy outfit. “It was unexpected and daring in so many ways.”
When it comes to her own fashion closet, the wifey of NBA baller Shannon Brown prefers to keep it motherhood-friendly. “As a mom on-the-go, I have found ways to blend high fashion and comfort,” said Monica, also admitting she has splurged on one particular item. “Being able to maneuver is important, and I have gone overboard this season buying fashionable flats.”
