‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Grosses $132 Million; Third Film In The Works

Movies & TV

Jon M. Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation resurrected the ailing franchise by grossing big bucks at the worldwide box office. With no doubt, one of the best showings ever for the year so far means three-quel, right?!

The action-adventure film which stars Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, and Bruce Willlis brought in $132 million globally, making it one of the top international debuts for the Easter holiday. Breaking it down dollar-for-dollar, the sequel took in $80.3 million overseas and $51.7 million domestically, including $41.2 million for the weekend proper.

The huge gross at the box office makes the film the second-best domestic Easter rake-in behind the 2010 film Clash of the Titans ($61.2 million). Internationally, G.I. Joe: Retaliation opened 10 percent ahead of Oz the Great and Powerful, which debuted earlier this month to the tune of $69.9 million.

All that is good news to Paramount, according to Variety, who reports that the studio will now move forward with plans to create a third installment (in 3-D no less) in the Hasbro franchise.

The successful opening of Jon M. Chu’s picture vindicates the studio for deciding to push back the film’s release from summer 2012 in order to convert it to 3-D and re-fashion Channing Tatum’s role so that the Magic Mike actor has more scenes.
