UPDATE: First Look At ‘Elysium’ Movie Trailer Directed By Neill Blomkamp

Could the critically-acclaimed helmer behind the 21st Century’s most intriguing sci-fi flicks have been the guy behind the new Star Wars movies? The answer may surprise you.

The director of District 9 and the upcoming Elysium has already cemented his place alongside science-fiction gurus with his brand of high octane action, rich characters and complex themes. When Disney announced that they would be revving up the Star Wars brand for a new generation, many nerds and cinephiles thought that Neill Blomkamp would be perfect to direct the pictures.

Although those duties have now fallen to Star Trek helmer, J.J. Abrams, both men noted their hesitancy to hold the top spot in the picture because, according to Abrams, “it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series.” At this Monday’s Elysium press event, also attended by Star Wars Episode VII producer, Simon Kinberg, Blomkamp mirrored the thoughts of his colleague.

“There’s a few pieces of cinema history that I like so much I don’t know whether I could be involved with them,” Blomkamp said. “There’s iconic characters that I really like that I would love to get closer to and make a film about. When I start dipping my toes into it, I get this allergic reaction.” Indication is that the filmmaker would rather work on engaging the world’s he has created with District 10 and possibly, Elysium 2.

A speculative stretch in the dark, maybe so, but if you don’t think that it wouldn’t be dope then make sure to tune in to the preview of the Matt Damon-starring sci-fi film below:
