Joey Bada$$ Talks Working With DJ Premier, Meeting Jay-Z And More On ‘Combat Jack Show’

Rap up-and-comer Joey Bada$$ sat down with Reggie Ossé of The Combat Jack Show for a three-part interview, where he discussed working with DJ Premiere, meeting Jay-Z and his upcoming free album, Summer Knights.

The 18-year-old rapper was discovered by his manager, Jonny Shipes, on Twitter, and became well-known after Mac Miller tweeted a shoutout before asking him to lend a verse on “America.” Since then, he’s been nominated for a BET Best Mixtape Hip-Hop Award, and gotten the chance to meet Jay-Z.

“Lowkey, I was just gonna walk in there and be like ‘YES, I’m ready, sign me now!'” said the rapper. “But I played it cool. It was just me and my mom and my manager… We just went in the office, and here he is at, like the back, by the window, just doing his regular Jay-Z shit.”

Though Joey didn’t sign with Roc Nation, the fellow Brooklyn native encouraged Joey to run with his track “Waves,” calling it “real music.” Jay-Z wasn’t the only one with advice for Joey; DJ Premier had some tips for the rapper as well. “He was telling me when he was coming up what it was like, how it’s like when I’m coming up, that he likes the path that I’m on, just giving me some points and tips, mentoring me, schooling me.”
