Michael Douglas Alleges Oral Sex Gave Him Cancer
Michael Douglas has been cancer free for two years. The two-time Oscar winner was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer in August of 2010, and underwent radiation and chemotherapy to rid himself of the terrible disease. But, now Douglas is sharing -- possibly oversharing -- how he got the cancer.
When asked in an interview with the UK's The Guardian if he regretted smoking and drinking through the years, usually associated with the cause of throat cancer, Douglas replied: "No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus."
The 68-year-old actor continued: "I did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it."
Douglas' son Cameron Douglas, 33, began a five-year prison in April 2010, right before Douglas' diagnosis, for dealing copious amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine from a New York hotel room. He was given an additional 4-and-a-half year sentence for taking drugs while in prison.
Douglas said he had a "walnut-size tumour at the base of my tongue that no other doctor had seen." He underwent an intense eight-week chemo and radiation regime that led him to shed 45 lbs because of his liquid diet. He says that "this kind of cancer, 95% of the time it doesn't come back."
Douglas has been married to Catherine Zeta-Jones since 2000 and the couple have two children together, ten-year-old Carys and Dylan, 12.
Douglas is getting rave reviews for his portrayal of Liberace in the HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra, which aired on the network on May 26 and is currently available OnDemand.
