Serena Williams on Steubenville Rape Case: ‘She Shouldn’t Have Put Herself in That Position’

You’d think No. 1 lady tennis titan Serena Williams would champion women, especially rape victims. But when asked about the conviction of two Steubenville, Ohio football players, who raped a 16-year-old girl, Williams essentially admonished the young woman’s behavior.

“I’m not blaming the girl,” she told Rolling Stone, “but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you — don’t take drinks from other people.”

The French Open winner added: “She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

Sadly, it sounds like Serena is pointing fingers in the wrong direction (and it’s doubtful that she was misquoted). So while writer dream hampton is ripping down her Serena posters, we suggest picture-perfect Beyoncé set flames to last week’s congratulatory note to the athlete.

Should we take this list back too?
