Watch: Orlando Bloom Return As Legolas In ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’

If you have been spending every day watching the first installment of The Hobbit, don’t worry, you’ll be able to replace it with this trailer after the jump.

The trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has been released online, and with it, the first look at Benedict Cumberbatch’s (Star Trek Into Darkness) big scaly fire-breathing dragon.

The British actor (and our pick for 2013’s Villain of the Year) voices the gold-loving Smaug in the second of Peter Jackson’s trilogy, which appears for a couple of seconds at the end of the new trailer – however, we still haven’t heard the beast’s voice and fans are beginning to hope that he utters something in the actual movie, or it could be upsetting for fans of the J.R.R. Tolkien series.

Cate Blanchett will star as Galadriel with Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins. The poster, which was created by director Peter Jackson, was also unveiled on the film’s official Twitter account (@TheHobbitMovie) yesterday.

The old characters from The Lord of the Rings trilogy have been called upon to hype up the latest film. The dwarves play a prominent role in the trailer with Bilbo Baggins as bewildered as usual. But the main jolt of excitement comes from the return of Orlando Bloom’s Legolas – who literally slides into the trilogy – and Luke Evans’ Bard the Bowman. The latter had a minor role in the previous film though is believed to be crucial to The Desolation of Smaug and There And Back Again.

According to Yahoo! Movies, the Bowman is tasked with stopping the terrifying dragon after warning the dwarves, “If you awaken that beast you will destroy us all.”

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is set to open in cinemas across the United States on December 13. It will be followed by the third installment of the franchise in December 2014.
