Beyonce Sends Birthday Wishes to Malala Yousafzai
I'm a survivor (What?)
I'm not gon give up (What?)
I'm not gon stop (What?)
I'm gon work harder.
Beyonce channeled the chorus of her 2001 Destiny's Child hit "Survivor" in an Instagram shout out to Malala Yousafzai, the 16-year-old Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban last October. Yousafzai was targeted coming home from school on her bus for advocating girls' rights to go to school. The Taliban put bullets through Yousafzai's head and neck and she remained in critical condition, but miraculously survived and was later transferred to a hospital in the U.K. for intense rehab.
Yousafzai made her first public statement since her attack on Friday, her sixteenth birthday. Beyonce took to Twitter to recognize the teenager's heroism with a note that read. "Your bravery and perseverance has touched the world," the singer wrote. "You are the true definition of a survivor."
"Let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism, and let us pick up our books and pens," said Yousafzai in her Friday speech. "They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education first."
