Event Recap: Afros—A Celebration of Natural Hair

For years Afros have embodied pride, beauty and strength within the Black community. Afros are our crowned jewels; the physical extension of ourselves. Those were photographer Michael July ‘s thoughts  when he created AFROS—A Celebration of Natural Hair.

His 448-page coffee-table book traces the cultural history of natural hair from the iconic dos of Angela Davis and musician Jimi Hendrix to the best fashion-forward trendsetters of 2013.

“We most definitely identify with our hair and seem to view our Afros and natural hair styles as a physical extension of ourselves, our identity with our conscience being,” says art educator Li Sumpter.

Last Friday (July 26) Michael celebrated the fascinating people portrayed in his book with a launch party at Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn. Jump the page to see pictures and click here to purchase the book.
