Review: ‘Ed Rec Vol. X’ (Feat. Mr. Oizo, Busy P, and More)

It has been five years since an Ed Banger compilation, and with 2013 marking the 10-year anniversary of the trend-setting French label, the timing is perfect for Ed Rec Vol. X. Spearheaded by one-time Daft Punk manager Pedro Winter AKA Busy P, Ed Banger has established itself by releasing whatever appeals to the label—no matter what the sub-electronic music genre. In the process, the Ed Banger stamp gives everything instant cool cache. Ed Rec Vol. X collects together some of Ed Banger’s recognizable names: Justice, Breakbot, Mr. Oizo, Feadz, So Me, among many others including Cassius and Sebastian, each with a new track for the compilation. Do not expect a condensed dance party. Instead, Ed Rec Vol. X showcases a range of styles and tempos. From the mid-range of Mr. Flash’s temperate house on “Reckless” to Justice’s buzzing pacer “BrainVision MMXIII,” DSL’s dirty electro on “In Your House,” and Breakbot’s sparkling club ballad “The Beach,” there is no danger of predictability anywhere. In addition to the fresh music, So Me, responsible for the label’s graphics, has put together an accompanying photographic book: Travaille. Famille. Party. Make sure to catch an Ed Banger anniversary party in one of many global locations throughout the year. – Lily Moayeri
