Review: The/Das ‘Speak Your Mind Speak’ Is Techno Tenderness

Berlin-based Fabian Fenk and Anton K. Feist, better known as The/Das, are on a mission to spread “techno tenderness” across the music spectrum. To that end, they are joined by boutique imprints Krakatau and Sinnbus, as well as Life and Death, the Italian post-dance label started by DJ Tennis and Greg Orech (of Thugfucker).

Formerly part of German folk-pop group Bodi Bill, in 2012 The/Das released their ‘Fresh-Water’ EP, a collaboration with Life and Death label mates Tale of Us that set both acts on a body-rocking path to underground DJ stardom.

In April of this year, they released their latest EP, ‘Speak Your Mind Speak.’ Angular like no wave and melodic like new wave, the original tracks echo Matt Dear’s Eno-leaning emo grooves, or LCD Soundsytem’s disco punk jams. On July 29, The/Das will drop ‘Speak Your Mind Remixes,’ a 3-track EP featuring reworks of “Colin” and “Have No Fear.”

Denmark’s Uffe, presently based in Amsterdam, brings a funky nerd touch to “Colin”, adding a dubby, sparkling vibe. Benjamin Damage, who recently released his own album on Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons label, kicks “Have No Fear” down the industrial warehouse route, while the enigmatic persona known as Vaal takes it for a shuffling, twinkling stroll.

To hear why they are rightfully becoming one of the most influential collectives in dance music, stream a preview of the ‘Speak Your Mind Remixes’ below.
